Building a professional network is a critical career skill, but it is the nurturing of your network that leads to relationships that last. It takes work, and may not always be the most easy or natural activity for you. Learn to put in the time – the results are well worth it.
Relationship Basics
Effective relationship building relies on basic skills:
- Listening. Attentive and active listening lays the groundwork for memorable connections.
- Conversation. Don’t monopolize it, but learn to keep it moving. Strike a balance of give and take; be authentic and sincere.
- Observation. Be sensitive to emotional triggers by observing body language and facial expressions carefully.
Above all, it is important to be respectful and recognize that not everyone thinks or acts the same. Learn to value the opportunity to learn and grow from different ideas and behaviors. By honoring diversity, you lay the groundwork for a free exchange of ideas. This builds trust and comfort – a great foundation on which your relationship will thrive.
Tips for Relationship Engagement
Nurturing the relationship will take some initiative. You may need to step out of your comfort zone to revitalize the contact. Below are several impactful ways sustain relationship momentum.
Check In. Even if you have no compelling reason, send a short note to check in at least every 6 months. Inquire about professional developments, and provide a brief update about yourself. Thank the person for being part of your professional network, and be sure to congratulate when appropriate. Don’t let an important relationship sit idle like so many LinkedIn connections or Twitter followers.
Ask for opinions. People generally welcome opportunities to share their views and expertise. Reach out when you have a need and you know your contact will be able to assist. Add a personal comment or two, and then be sure to thank the person for helping you.
Make Introductions. Your contacts will appreciate making new connections, and will be flattered when you think of them. Connected people help each other. Ask for permission, though, before you make the introduction.
Mail Something. In the midst of our electronic world, a card or handwritten note that is received through the mail stands out. Try sending an article, magazine or good book if you think your contact would love it, and explain why you’re sending it. Exceptional effort will drive exceptional results.
Make it Happen
Like other things that truly matter, you will need to prioritize and commit to developing relationships. The reward is well worth the effort and will enrich you for years to come.
