Why Should I Take the SIE Exam in College?

19

In the era of asynchronous learning college students are turning to various self-study methods and starting a trend of taking the Securities Industry Esenstials (SIE) exam early. The SIE exam covers foundational knowledge used in careers in investment banking, wealth management, sales and trading and more.

By studying for it, you’ll get strong, comprehensive industry knowledge across a wide range of topics. Even with no finance background taking this step is beneficial for people across all industries and walks of life.

Competitive Edge

Taking the SIE in college provides a competitive edge in all future hiring processes. Whether it be within the finance field or any other, taking the SIE shows strong initiative, and a commitment to learning. Brock Fizer, a former New York University student, took the SIE during his college career precisely because of the competitive edge it would provide him. Upon taking it, he found that not only was this true, but passing the SIE reaped benefits ranging from understanding everyday financial language to being a more desirable candidate in the job market.

Knowing the Language

While the SIE may not teach every topic finance has to offer in depth, it teaches the language needed to understand the industry in a way that’s relevant to everyday life. Whether it be helpful when reading financial news, participating in discussions about investing or even managing personal finances, the SIE is an opportunity to learn the language needed to do any of those and more. “If you’re not in finance you have an even greater benefit from studying for the SIE”, Brock says, “it’s applicable to life across the board.”

Power Over Personal Finances

Most colleges don’t teach students basic personal finance, even those majoring in business. The SIE covers the fundamentals, and it provides enough detail to give you a head start in becoming familiar with key concepts and language.

Study and Learning Mindset

Lastly, as a college student, a benefit of taking the SIE is the built-in study habits and testing mindset. As an individual who often goes through the studying and test-taking process you have a head start. Taking the SIE in college means lower stakes – for Brock it created a low-pressure environment which made it easier to retain the information.
