Internship Woes? Steps to Get Back on Track

Undoubtedly, the right internship can mean a fast start to a tremendous career.  In fact, most juniors in college business programs rank obtaining a summer internship as a number one priority during their first semester. The competition becomes heated as the year wears on and as open positions are filled.

So, come January or beyond, what happens if you still find yourself waiting?

The reality is that not everyone lands the internship of their dreams.  You are likely to hear “Sorry, we’ve chosen someone else”, and in many situations you won’t receive a response at all.

Don’t take it personally, and don’t give up. Rejection can actually help you find an even better opportunity.  But, you need to develop a thick skin and tenacity to get back on track. You can do it, and the tips below will make it easier.

  • Keep your head up. Think of the process as a numbers game.  Your chances are enhanced by finding more opportunities.  Re-gain your confidence, go after it, and work harder than ever.  Backing off won’t make it happen.
  • Network. Now is the time to reach out to your friends, family, colleagues and peers.  Let them know you’re looking for an internship.  Cast your net wider, and you may be surprised at the opportunities you uncover through your contacts.
  • Get Feedback. Ask your recruiter what went wrong.  Pay close attention to the feedback and use it.  Strive to learn and continually improve.
  • Have someone review your resume. Is there room for improvement in the introduction, the format, flow or wording? Think of your resume as your first impression – it needs to be the best it can be.  Ask for input from career services professionals, professors, parents, or others who can give objective feedback about how to make your resume stand out.
  • Enhance your skills. Sign up for a class, do some research, read some books. If you received feedback that you’re not qualified for some aspect of a job – change that! Learning new skills will improve your chances of getting the job and will also help you grow.
